Rand hosts his meeting, with many rulers in favor of his plan and others, particularly Amyrlin Seat Egwene al'Vere, in opposition. The few Asha'man still loyal to Logain, led primarily by Androl Genhald and Aes Sedai ambassador Pevara Tazanovni, stage a rescue attempt. At the Black Tower, the internal struggle between Taim and Logain Ablar has boiled over into open conflict, with Logain missing and Taim using a form of brainwashing to turn people to the Shadow. In the meanwhile, Mat returns to Ebou Dar on a mission to locate Tuon, only to find the city crawling with assassins sent by one of her generals. Rand al'Thor, the Dragon Reborn, prepares to host a meeting of all the nations of the Westlands on the Field of Merrilor, where he will attempt to persuade them to fight in Tarmon Gai'don. Another of the Forsaken is present at the meeting, an ugly woman called Hessalam, known before as Graendal. He has been given a new name by the Shadow, known only as M'Hael. The Shadow welcomes Mazrim Taim as a new Forsaken to their ranks in thanks for his service in turning many channelers to the Shadow. The Light is bolstered by people coming from all over the world to fight, sensing the end of all things. Talmanes Delovinde and the Band of the Red Hand launch their own counterattack and successfully remove the Dragons out of the city, but Caemlyn is lost. The Forsaken Demandred stages a raid on the city of Caemlyn, sending Trollocs to capture Aludra Nendenhald's Dragons, developed jointly by Matrim Cauthon, Queen Elayne Trakand and the Illuminator Aludra Nendenhald. In the prologue, the armies of the Westlands assemble in preparation for Tarmon Gai'don, as do the forces of the Shadow.

On September 26, 2012, the full text of chapter one was released on Tor.com. It was announced that the prologue of the book would be released as an e-book on October 2, 2012, however it was released early on September 19 due to accidental release in some regions. An excerpt of the prologue on April 26, an excerpt of chapter one on July 15, an excerpt of chapter eleven on September 2, 2012, and an excerpt of chapter three on December 30, 2012. Four excerpts of the final book have been released on the publisher's website, Tor.com.
